Developing the new Appliance World website and migrating Shopify Plus
Published by Jack 5 October 2024
We migrated applianceworldonline.com from Magento 2 to Shopify Plus and overhauled the entire tech stack. After 15 years with the same warehouse management system, we migrated to a new WMS and built the integrations to connect everything seamlessly with our redesigned Shopify Plus store.
Why the move?
More control, better integrations, speed, and to focus on growth not server or sync issues.
Design and technical improvements
The speed is 3x faster than the previous website according to Google lighthouse.
Rated 98/100 on ahrefs up from 20!
Google rates the website as “Exceptional”
Redesigned flow to make it easier and more logical to find products.
Greatly improved the mobile experience, browsing on mobile is now fast and much more intuitive.
More checkout options (Clearpay, Shop Pay with Novuna finance coming soon)
Customers get larger warnings about delivery upstairs and must click to accept terms and conditions before they’re allowed to checkout.
Instant orders confirmation and follow up emails with terms.
Support pages improved and there’s a secondary navigation linking help guides together.
Search bar is built-in so you should find products easier, you can also search pages such as “Returns”.
Customer accounts are clearer and they can securely login from an order confirmation email link without a password.
Greater stability – the store will have less timeouts and errors due to the move to Shopify. Even under heavy load it will stay online and snappy.
Favourites and Multibuy feature allowing easy comparison, sharing and quote building.
Products
Products have had their title reformatted e.g. BRAND – MODEL – COLOUR – CATEGORY. This helps customers and Google find the right products.
Filters have been upgraded up and are much faster to load when applied.
You can sort by best sellers, new in, alphabetical and by price.
We can choose which products appear at the top of collection (category) pages.
High resolution energy labels and brand logos.
PayPal and Clearpay finance breakdown on the category pages and product pages.
Clicking a promotion will open a window and show you more information.
Postcode driven additional services e.g. installs are much easier to add from the product page
Services will unlock if they enter their postcode in an eligible area, this is much clearer.
Customers will see services at the cart stage as well. If they’ve already added an additional service then it will show as “Added”.
Consistent listings on category/collection pages making it easier to compare.
You can filter specifications on product pages.
Manuals and iframe embeds available.
Standout features being introduced underneath the product image on the product page.
Category pages all have buying guides at the top of them.
Upgraded products reviews.
Upgraded email integration.
Easily schedule in promotions to appear on products on category or product pages. No out of date promos should show going forward.
The navigation bar contains promotions related to that category of products.
New top bar showing offers rotating.
Home page is modifiable easily to better display offers.
Postcode persistence
The customer only needs to enter their postcode once and it will sync through the site always showing the next available delivery date for that specific product.
A customer postcode isn’t needed until checkout but they will need it if they want to any region restricted options to their basket e.g. Gas installs.
Pricing and discounts
Prices automatically sync through from the pricing app reducing errors as there’s no need to download and import or sync prices greatly improving pricing agility.
Discounts can be set in the pricing application and sync automatically. These can be set until X sell or on a schedule.
